Tucked away in the Ionian Sea like a well-kept secret, Paxos is a storybook island where time slows down and beauty turns up the volume. If island charm were an art form, Paxos would be the masterpiece. Venetian elegance lingers in the architecture, while the coastline is a nonstop reel of turquoise coves, sun-bleached rocks, and beaches that look like they belong on a postcard—or maybe a movie set (Erimitis, we’re looking at you). The sea? Liquid sapphire. The sunsets? Award-worthy. It’s a slow-living sanctuary with just the right touch of glamour.
Let’s talk beaches.
- Erimitis, formed by a landslide in 2008, is dramatic and breathtaking, with aquamarine waters, white cliffs, and a golden-hour glow that will have your camera begging for mercy. It even had a starring role in Maestro, the Greek Netflix series, as it is the beach that Orestis and Klelia found shelter so as to be together.
- Orkos, near Lakka, is all about lush surroundings and deep blue waters, reachable also by a woodland path—a little hike, a big reward.
- Kipiadi is Paxos’ biggest beach, and its clean, pebbled stretch and dazzling turquoise sea make it a go-to for peaceful swims.
- Kaki Lagkada, one of Paxos’ largest beaches, lies just outside Gaios and offers space, serenity, and a crystalline welcome to swimmers.
- Monodendri, one of the few organized beaches, checks every box: sunbeds, beach bar, taverna, and that irresistible Ionian sparkle.
- Levrechio is for those slow, sun-drenched afternoons, with a beachside taverna that turns a swim into a full-blown experience.
- Marmari, right next door, is shaded by towering trees and lapped by transparent waves—secluded and serene.
- Mongonisi, technically an islet, is one of Paxos’ sandy surprises. Shallow, warm waters and visitor-friendly comforts make it a great stop for families.
- Plakes is tiny, tucked away, and totally tranquil, perfect for basking on smooth rocks with only the sound of the sea for company.
- Galazio, as the name promises, is a vivid blue beauty on the wild west coast, accessible only by boat—private, pristine, and practically perfect.
Wander inland and you’ll find Gaios, the elegant main town, where cosmopolitan cafés meet cobbled charm. Lakka, up north, is a yachtie haven—think pastel buildings, Venetian echoes, and greenery spilling into the sea. And Loggos? It’s tiny, it’s traditional, and it might just serve you the best seafood of your life.
Blue Caves
Then there’s the Blue Caves—a limestone labyrinth carved by wind and wave into some of the most magical seascapes in Greece.
The Ypapanti cave is jaw-droppingly vast—you can sail right into its heart. Nearby, the Ortholithos rock stands tall and mystical, like nature dropped a monolith into the sea just for fun, if you look at it from inside the cave this dramatic vertical rock seems to be guarding the entrance like a mythic sentinel. Between Ortholithos and Erimitis is the most popular cluster of caves, taking their name “Blue Caves” from the vivid blue waters around them, there you’ll find collapsed roofs that let the sunlight pour through, illuminating the sea in surreal shades of electric blue. Some caves, like the ones near Erimitis or Achai, are linked together; others, like those at Mongonisi, shimmer with glowing foam that makes the water look enchanted. One even hides a miniature beach inside. The west coast of Paxos is a playground for the adventurous, and each cave feels like a hidden chapter in an epic sea story.
Antipaxos
Just three nautical miles south lies Antipaxos, Paxos’ tiny, tropical sibling.
It may be small, but it’s got a big reputation—Voutoumi and Vrika are often crowned the best beaches in the Ionian. Powder-white sand meets glass-clear waters so transparent you can count your toes without dipping your head. These beaches are friendlier for families, with soft sandy entries and shallows perfect for little swimmers. Inland, Antipaxos is all lush vegetation, wild vineyards, and a scattering of hidden beaches like Sarakiniko and Rodovani—quiet, pebbled spots that feel like your own private paradise. And yes, the island’s wine is just as good as the view.
